Sedgwick County sheriff's deputies are searching for a man suspected in a recent copper theft.

Late Monday morning, deputies spotted a white Chevrolet Suburban with the rear window broken out drive onto a field in the 4700 block of West 55th Street South. The officers could see two men inside the SUV and a large amount of copper wire in the cargo portion. Deputies called for additional units to respond, and waited several minutes for a perimeter to be established.

Moments later, deputies saw smoke coming from a tree row near the Suburban and moved in. The two men tried to quickly drive away, but became stuck. The pair tried to get away on foot, and deputies quickly captured a 31-year-old Wichita man. He was booked for Criminal Trespass. The other was able to get away.

Investigators found that the Suburban had been stolen from Wichita, but they're still trying to determine the source of the copper.

Now deputies are looking for the second suspect, who they've identified as 40-year-old Stephen S. Effertz. He's described as a white man, 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighs approximately 150 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes and was last known to live in the Wichita area.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the sheriff's office at (800) 874-6449 or Crime Stoppers at (316) 267-2111.
