WICHITA, Kan. -- The Sedgwick County Emergency Communications non-emergency phone line will be open on New Year's Eve.
This line is an alternative to 911 and meant for calls of non-emergency nuisances that do not pose a threat to life or property, such as complaints about parties, fireworks and excessive noise.
On July 4, 2011, 911 dispatchers were so inundated with callers complaining about fireworks, that others trying to report a motorcycle accident in northwest Wichita kept getting a busy signal. That person later died.
The non-emergency line was created the following year and is only staffed during specified times and events, specifically during times of high call volumes such as July 4 and New Year's.
The number is 290-1011, and will be available from 6 p.m. tonight until 3 a.m. January 1.
