People and puppies escaped unharmed after a west Wichita house caught fire late Friday night.

Wichita Fire Department Capt. Brent Holman said crews were called to the two-story house in the 300 block of South Osage about 11:30 p.m. He said heavy smoke was coming from the second floor as firefighters arrived. The fire was burning in the attic, Holman said, and crews were able to extinguish it quickly.

Holman said the residents of the home got out of the house before crews arrived. Firefighters were able to get the pets out.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and investigators not yet made a damage estimate.
