A North Newton man was killed, and several others were hurt in a crash Friday in southeast Kansas.

It happened around 5:15 p.m. on U.S. 160, a few miles west of Columbus. The Kansas Highway Patrol said a Dodge pickup was heading westbound on 160, changed lanes to avoid slowing traffic and hit a Toyota passenger car head-on.

The driver of the Toyota, 56-year-old Frank Williams of Newton, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passengers, 47-year-old Ma Fides Williams and 49-year-old Marie Natuel of Hesston, were taken to a hospital in Joplin, Missouri for treatment.

The woman driver and a toddler in the pickup were taken by private vehicle to a local hospital. They are identified as 31-year-old Elizabeth Ryan and 1-year-old Hunter Hamelin of Columbus.

Conditions of those hospitalized were not available.
