Two new schools break ground to address current and future growth problems in northeast parts of the Wichita Public Schools' district.
"It will help us address not only some of the overcrowding that we have in some of our schools, but also positions us for the future because of the potential area growth in this part of the city," said John Allison, Wichita Schools Superintendent.
The new K-8 school is being built by the southeast corner of 53rd St. North and Woodlawn and the new high school, by the northeast corner of 53rd St. North and Rock Rd. Both sites are on the northeast parts of the district and in the city of Bel Aire.
"Because of the community development that's happening in this area. We know that there's great potential for future growth out here with new homes and new families moving in," said Denise Wren, Wichita Schools Assistant Superintendent of High Schools.
The two schools are being built as part of the $370 million bond issue passed by Wichita voters in 2008.
School names and boundaries will be determined next year. The schools will be ready for students in the fall of 2012.
