The National Transportation Safety Board said a Kansas pilot was killed when his cropduster hit power lines. The NTSB released its preliminary report today.
Don Cates, a Barton County Commissioner, died in the crash near Garfield, KS last week. A witness told investigators he hired Cates to spray his hay fields. The witness saw a puff of smoke when the plane struck a set of power lines. The airplane descended behind a tree line. The witness then drove to where he last saw the plane and found the wreckage in a ditch. The plane did not catch fire after crashing.
Cates was 67 years old.
