WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita didn't see any snow, and very limited rain Thursday morning, but the morning commute was still messy.
There were a total of eleven cars involved in four separate accidents on a short stretch of I-235 near Zoo Boulevard. It all started with a four vehicle non-injury crash. From there, traffic congested, triggering a downward spiral.
"We had two separate non-injury collisions behind them, trying to avoid that collision," said Master Trooper Chad Crittenden." A minute or two later, we had a three vehicle injury collision."
A fourth accident happened shortly after, near 25th Street. In all, four people received minor injuries, but the crashes weren't the only concern for Highway Patrol officers. Drivers rushing to work were trying to skirt traffic by turning around in medians, which is an illegal maneuver. A violation can cost you a $75 ticket plus court fees. But troopers say this law ultimately is in place for your safety.
"Once they do enter the crossover, they're going to be turning into the fastest lane, the passing lane, which is 65 miles per hour," Crittenden said. "They are starting at zero, so they could get hit from behind or traffic behind them has to slow down."
The accidents were cleared by the time the lunch commute started.
