GREAT BEND, Kan. — A memorial fund has been set up for the children of a Reno County jail deputy and his wife who died in a motorcycle crash over the weekend.
It happened just after noon Saturday in the 5900 block of 10th Street in Great Bend. Three motorcycles were heading westbound as they approached an eastbound truck pulling a trailer hauling a lawnmower.
As they got closer, the trailer detached, crossed the centerline and hit one of the motorcycles ridden by Reno County Jail Deputy Shawn Schellenger and his wife, Danielle.
The two suffered critical injuries and were flown to a Wichita hospital, where Danielle died later on Saturday. The Reno County Sheriff's Department said Shawn passed away on Sunday.
The couple had two children, a five-year-old boy named Warren and a seven-year-old daughter named Dominique. Both children were on each of the other two motorcycles when the accident happened. One was being driven by a family friend, Deputy Dustin Vanscyoc, and the other was driven by Shawn's father, Jeff Schellinger.
They were not hurt, and Deputy Vanscyoc is currently caring for the children.
Deputy Schellenger had been with the Reno County Sheriff's Office for almost one year, having previously worked in the Butler County Jail. He was also a United States Army veteran who served in Iraq.
For anyone interested in making a donation, the Schellenger Children's Memorial Fund has been set up at the First National Bank of Hutchinson. For questions, call the bank at (620) 694-2390.
