A Great Bend man has died after crashing his motorcycle during a chase with Hays police. It happened at around 6:45 p.m. Friday along U.S. Highway 183, just southwest of Fort Hays State University.

The Hays Police department said Ryan McGinness, 32, ran a red light at 8th and Vine. Police said the motorcycle swerved as the driver turned right from 8th St. onto Vine. The motorcycle continued to Vine and 183 Alternate, where he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection.

The Patrol Lieutenant activated his emergency lights and siren in an effort to stop the motorcyclist. As the Lieutenant attempted to catch up to the motorcyclist, the motorcycle was observed passing several vehicles while accelerating to speeds estimated over 100 mph. The pursuit lasted less than a minute with the motorcyclist being out of the
Lieutenant’s sight when the crash took place.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says McGinness then failed to make a curve in the roadway and hit an embankment. His motorcycle flipped several times and came to rest in a nearby field.

McGinness was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say he was not wearing a helmet.
