A 26-year-old mother was arrested early Saturday morning after allegedly trying to steal items from a northwest Wichita Walmart and leaving her 2-week-old infant inside the store.
The woman was in the Walmart in New Market Square at 21st Street and Maize Road when store security noticed her placing items in the baby’s carrier. The woman had been opening packages and placing the merchandise on top of the baby inside the cart, said Wichita Police Sgt. William Stevens.
Employees told police she had been walking around the store for from around 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. before setting the carrier on the ground and continuing to walk around the store for another 30 minutes, Stevens said.
The woman then reportedly left the store without her baby and the items she tried to steal. Officers stopped her in the parking lot as she was trying to flee.
She told police she thought a friend had come to pick up her baby before she was informed the infant was left inside. She then told them she had an addiction problem. Officers said she appeared to be under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident.
She was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail for child abandonment and an unrelated felony warrant. Her name is being withheld pending formal charges.
