A Wichita mom is in jail on child endangerment charges after authorities responded to a smoke alarm call Saturday evening and found her asleep and possibly intoxicated on the couch and her two children unsupervised.
Firefighters were initially called just before 8 p.m. to a monitored smoke alarm at a residence in the 2300 block of S. Stoney Point. Sgt. Bart Brunscheen said firefighters arrived on scene, looked through windows and saw smoke inside the home. They also saw two children, ages one and four, inside but did not see any adults.
Police arrived and forced entry into the house. They discovered food had been left cooking on the stove and began to burn.
"The fire department said that had it continued to be left unattended, they believe it would have turned into a full house fire," Brunscheen said. "They do find the mother of the two children is asleep on the couch, and they believe that she was under the influence of something."
The 34-year-old mother was arrested on two counts of aggravated child endangerment. Her name has not been released.
We spoke with a neighbor, who didn't want to be identified. She tells us the woman and her family moved in about six months ago.
""I think accidents happen. I don't know why she didn't wake up to the fire alarms going on the house. I don't know her that well to know if she was on something but from what I know she seems like a good mom and she seems like a good person," the neighbor said.
The children were checked out by EMS and "released to a third party," Brunscheen said. They were not hurt.
