TOPEKA, Kan. — A Minnesota roofing company was ordered to pay $80,000 in penalties and remains barred from doing business in Kansas for violating the state's consumer protection laws.

A Shawnee County district judge ordered Pinnacle Exteriors LLC of Eagan, Minnesota to pay the civil penalty. According to the Kansas Attorney General's Office, the company was accused of engaging in deceptive and unconscionable practices while selling roofing services door-to-door and of attempting to collect money from consumers for work never performed.

“Our office is actively cracking down on these fly-by-night operations,” Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said. “Kansans in need of roof repairs should seek out a reputable, local roofing company that is properly registered with the attorney general’s office, as required by law.”

Previous story - March 10, 2014:

A roofing company based in Minnesota has been banned from doing business in Kansas until it cooperates with the attorney general's investigation into its business practices.

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt filed a lawsuit in Shawnee County District Court accusing Pinnacle Exteriors LLC of Eagan, Minnesota of violating the Kansas Consumer Protection Act. The lawsuit alleges that the company engaged in deceptive and unconscionable practices while selling roofing services door-to-door and of attempting to collect money from consumers for work never performed.

Last week, a Shawnee County judge entered a temporary restraining order prohibiting the company from operating in Kansas until it complies with an investigative subpoena issued by Schmidt.

The company is known to have operated in Reno and Shawnee Counties. Anyone with information about the company is asked to contact the attorney general's consumer protection division at (800) 432-2310.

The attorney general’s office also administers the new Roofing Registration Act, which requires all roofing contractors operating in Kansas to register with the attorney general. Since the Act took effect on July 1, 2013, more than 600 roofers have registered. For more information or to check whether a roofing contractor is registered, visit www.InYourCornerKansas.org.
