TOPEKA, Kan The $1 million Powerball cash prize won in Saturday night's drawing has been claimed by a Topeka woman. The lucky winner, who wished to remain anonymous, matched the first five numbers, but not the Powerball, on a $6 Quick Pick ticket.
"I buy tickets about twice a month or whenever I have a few extra dollars to spend," said the winner. "Friday night, I was playing poker with friends and we talked about what it would be like if one of us ever won a big prize playing the lottery. I never dreamed it would actually happen to me the very next day!"
The lucky winner discovered she was holding the $1 million winning ticket Saturday night after seeing the Powerball winning numbers on the local news.
"When I realized how much I had won, I stayed calm," said the winner. "Even though it was close to midnight, I wanted to go out to eat and celebrate."
Sunday morning, while at church, the winner shared her good news with a few family members.
"Everyone is happy for me," said the winner. "Today, I'm going to see if I can reduce my hours at work. I'm retirement age and I'm ready to slow down. Winning $1 million will allow me to pay off bills and enjoy life a little more."
The winning ticket was purchased at Dillons 67, located at 2010 SE 29th St. in Topeka. For selling the $1 million winning Powerball ticket, the store is eligible for a $1,000 selling bonus.
