Reno county prosecutors have charged two men accused of theft and leading officers on a chase through two counties.
It started in rural Reno county near Haven around 5 p.m. Monday. The victim, Randy Harder, tells KAKE news two men stole a shotgun from his vehicle while he worked in the field. The suspects drove away in an SUV.
Harder says he tried to chase after the men but could not find them and called 911.
Officers chased the men into northwest Wichita where officials say they bailed from the SUV and ran into a wooded area near 37th Street North and Tyler Road.
Both suspects were apprehended by 9 p.m.
Sheriff Randy Henderson said the shotgun has still not been located.
Prosecutors charged Gilford Sherley, 47, of Emporia, and Donald Cook, 49, of Wichita, with auto burglary, theft and obstruction or resisting arrest.
Henderson said Sherley was on parole from the Kansas Department of Corrections. Cook was an absconder. According to the KDOC, both had an extensive criminal history. Sherley was convicted of robbery, aggravated assault and kidnapping in 1990. Cook was first jailed in 1999 on forgery charges. He was also convicted of burglary, narcotic possession and identity theft.

Both suspects were captured with the help of highly-trained police dogs. A K9 officer with the Sedgwick County Sheriff department located the first suspect while the second was caught by a Kansas Highway Patrol K9 officer. The second suspect is being treated for a dog bite.

Officials say one of the two men wanted for a burglary and vehicle chase has been taken into custody. The man was arrested near 37th Street North and Stone Barn Street in Maize. Officials say the weapon the men are believed to have taken has not been recovered.
The man who reported the burglary tells KAKE News he believes the men stole a shotgun from his pickup truck. Randy Harder says around 5 p.m. Monday he was working on a tractor in field in southwest Reno County when his partner told him two men had been rummaging around in his truck about a hundred yards from where he was working.
Harder says he went to the truck and found it ransacked and a shotgun had been stolen. He says the gun was not loaded but there were several loose shells in the truck that possibly could have been taken.
Harder says he got into his truck to find the thieves and passed a black sport utility vehicle on the road. He says he waved at the two men in the SUV but they ignored him and started driving erratically.
Harder says his partner called a few minutes later and told him the two men may have been responsible for the vehicle burglary. Harder says he tried to chase after the men but could not find them and called 911.
