UPDATE: Wednesday, May 23, 2012
Wichita Police knew a vehicle struck a bicycle rider late Saturday in South Wichita, but now they say a second vehicle ran over the man as he lay in the street.
Authorities responded to the accident in the 1900 block of S. Seneca Saturday night. The bicyclist was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died. The victim has been identified as 49-year-old John Fuqua, of Wichita.
Investigators believe the first car that struck the bicyclist was a white sedan. A second vehicle, a dark-colored SUV or hybrid, ran over the victim in the road. Both vehicles drove away from the scene, police said.
Authorities said several people saw the accident, but few witnesses have shared details. Anyone with information is asked to call the accident follow up unit 268-4131.
"When somebody flees the scene after a crash, it aggravates everything that occurred," said Lt. Joe Schroeder. "We need to find the two drivers and hold them accountable."
UPDATE: Monday, May 21, 2012
Authorities are struggling to close a deadly hit and run accident that happened in South Wichita Saturday night. Not only do they not know who the suspect is, they haven't been able to identify the victim, either.
Sgt. Kevin Vaughn said a man in his 40s was hit by a car in the 1900 block of South Seneca Street late Saturday night. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Investigators said the suspect's vehicle may be a white or light-colored sedan. The vehicle is likely to have front-end damage.
Detectives are reviewing surveillance video from nearby businesses to locate the driver.
"The good thing about today, there are a lot of cameras out there," Vaughn said. "A lot of businesses have that surveillance equipment. It not only works to protect them, but it helps in our investigations, too."
Anyone with information on the case can leave an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 267-2111.
