WICHITA, Kan. — The man who killed a Derby mother and stabbed her teenage son last year has been sentenced to prison.
Charles A. Beck Jr., 40, suffocated to death Lonnie Staggs in her home in Derby on September 1, 2013. He also tried to strangle the woman’s 15-year-old son, Nathan, with a cord. He did cut the boy’s face and neck with a knife before the boy ran to a bedroom and shut the door. He was arrested soon after in Missouri
Beck pleaded guilty last month to charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
This morning, he was sentenced to life on the murder conviction. He will be eligible for parole after 25 years. He was also sentenced to nearly 14 years for attempted murder, set to run consecutively.
