Wichita Police say a man fractured his neck after crashing his car while fleeing a traffic stop. It happened shortly after 11 o'clock Friday night in the 2400 block of North Estelle.

Sgt. Bruce Watts said the man had been pulled over on suspicion of driving under the influence. When the officer left his patrol car to try to make contact with the man, the suspect tried to run him over.

Watts says he crashed his vehicle a short distance away. EMS transported the man to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis, where his neck fracture was discovered. He is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit.

Sgt. Watts says the officer involved was not hurt.
