A Missouri man has pleaded guilty to robbing a Kansas bank with a hatchet.
Today, 35-year-old Derek T. Brownlee of Kansas City, Missouri pleaded guilty to one count of armed robbery for robbing Metcalf Bank in Overland Park last summer.
According to the complaint, on July 1, Brownell walked into the bank wearing a bandana over his face and carrying a hatchet. It alleges that he then jumped over the teller's counter and demanded money, taking cash from a drawer and personal items from the teller.
Overland Park police officers soon spotted him driving away, and he led them on a chase at speeds up to 90 miles per hour. He bailed from the car and ran, but was soon arrested.
Sentencing for Brownlee is scheduled for January 21. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years and a fine up to $250,000.
