UPDATE: Monday, December 10, 2012
Wichita Police have arrested a man for murder in connection to fatal stabbing early Sunday morning.
Shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday, a fight broke out at a party in the 1900 block of White Oak Drive, located near Pawnee and Rock.
During the fight, 27-year-old Tan Nguyen was stabbed. He was taken by a personal vehicle to Via Christi Hospital on East Harry, then transported by ambulance to the Saint Francis location where he later died in surgery.
Officers have since arrested 29-year-old Dat Nguyen, and booked him into the Sedgwick County jail on first degree murder charges. Dat Nguyen and Tan Nguyen are not related.
Police said the fight stemmed from a long-standing feud between the suspect and Tan Nguyen's brother. They say Tan Nguyen got into a fight with the suspect's friends. At some point, Tan Nguyen's brother pulled out a handgun. That's when police say Dat Nguyen pulled a knife and allegedly stabbed the victim.
Family members who were at the party disagree with that account. They tell us Tan Nguyen did not start the physical fight but was actually trying to break up the fight when he was stabbed.
No one else was hurt. Tan Nguyen's brother was also arrested on charges of aggravated assault for pulling the gun.
This is the 23rd homicide of the year in Wichita.
