A man is recovering at a Wichita hospital, and another is in custody following a stabbing Friday afternoon at a downtown park.
It happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. near East Douglas and St. Francis. Sgt. Roger Runft said several people were at the park when the suspect became angry over some comments a woman had made. The two began arguing and witnesses intervened.
As witnesses were escorting the suspect out of the park, he went after one of them. After a brief physical altercation, the suspect pulled a knife, which was knocked out of his hand.
"They thought it was over with, and everybody was walking away. As they walked around the block, the victim in the case wanted to go recontact the suspect and finish the argument...and he was subsequently stabbed," Runft said.
The 19-year-old man was stabbed in the abdomen. He was taken to Via Christi on St. Francis in critical condition but has since been upgraded. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
The 25-year-old suspect was later located at the bus station on Topeka Street and arrested.
Runft said those involved in the incident likely knew each other. No names have been released.
