A Wichita man was arrested for theft just minutes before he was supposed to be sentenced in a previous theft case.
Witnesses observed the man shoplifting candy from the snack shop inside the Sedgwick County Courthouse Tuesday afternoon and alerted nearby security. Detectives questioned the man and found several pieces of candy on him, worth about five dollars.
The suspect, 53-year-old Kevin D. Crowder, was at the courthouse to be sentenced on a previous theft case. After attending his sentencing hearing, Crowder was booked into jail on a new charge of theft.
"I can't offer an explanation for what was going through his mind", Mattingly said.
"This one does make you scratch your head, and it's kind of surprising," Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Dave Mattingly said. "Unfortunately that's what we have to deal with sometimes."
Crowder has previously served time on similar charges.
