A man has been arrested after a nearly 12-hour ordeal that involved a car chase and escape in a canoe.
It all began around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night when Kingman County deputies tried to stop a suspected stolen car. A chase ensued, that eventually ended in southwest Sedgwick County when spike strips were deployed near 295th Street West and 63rd Street South.
The suspect ran through a field, then jumped into a canoe at the nearby Ninnescah River and lost authorities.
A perimeter was set up and the search continued for several more hours until someone called police about a hitchhiker in the area. The suspect then allegedly stole a second vehicle, leading officers on a second chase, but he was quickly cornered and captured.
Authorities believe the 33-year-old suspect is connected to a recent string of thefts and burglaries that stretched across three counties.
