A general home safety tip is trust your neighbors, like asking them to keep an eye on your house while you're out of town. But what if your neighbor is the one you should be protecting your home from?
That's what happened to several homeowners in Salina.
Jared Bushnell says he knew someone else was in his home Wednesday afternoon when he heard noises coming from his basement.
"As I turned the corner I saw him walk into the bathroom. I didn't have anything on me so I picked up a folding chair and walked towards the bathroom,” Jared Bushnell said.
That's when the intruder came out, but Bushnell says he was shocked to see the burglar was his neighbor, Johnathan Shinn.
"I helped him with my van I helped him jump his ex-girlfriend's car just last week,” Bushnell said.
Bushnell says Shinn had taken a gun, knife, and 160 dollars cash. Shinn ran off before police arrived but they got a search warrant for his house. Inside, they say they found items stolen from two other neighbors.
But the story doesn't end there. Later that night as Bushnell sat on his front porch, he says Shinn came home.
"I'm like what is going on? Is he that dumb to come back?" Bushnell said.
Bushnell's wife called police. He grabbed his gun and confronted his neighbor.
"And I leveled my gun at him and said 'stay there,' and there wasn't a round in the chamber. I didn't want to hurt him. I just wanted him to let him know I was serious,” Bushnell said.
Jared Bushnell says he's glad no one was hurt Wednesday but mostly, he's happy he came home when he did.
Jonathan Shinn was arrested and faces several charges including aggravated burglary and felony theft.
Police say before Shinn returned home Wednesday night and was arrested, he stopped by a local lawn care store and stole several items including a wheel barrow.
