An intersection under construction in North Wichita is causing a lot of trouble, despite a big sign warning drivers to slow down. It's at 13th and Hillside, where construction has been going on for several months.
The problem is a huge dip where the new pavement meets the old. If you don't slow way down, you're going to regret it.
As we watched Monday, car after car scraped bottom. Angela Henderson was unfortunate enough to crack her oil pan Saturday.
"The impact was so hard when I hit the bump, I was like 'OK... did I damage the front end of my car?' Lo and behold, when I stopped, I did."
There is a big sign right before the intersection warning drivers of the bump, but Henderson says that sign wasn't there on Saturday when she drove through. She says she was doing less than the posted speed limit of 30 mph.
"The sign was not posted on Saturday at 9:00 in the morning" Henderson said. "I talked to a member of the construction site that's over there working on it and they told me that they did not put that 15 mph sign up until this morning."
We can't confirm that allegation. The construction company workers said they couldn't talk to us. Even so, Henderson believes - to small cars like hers - that dip might as well be a cliff... even if you slow down.
"Even with a low riding car, it's going to scrape," Henderson said. "It may be a smaller scrape and it's not as bad, but you're still going to scrape because the way that bump is, it's not how fast you're going."
Henderson says she will be filing a claim with the city for damages.
