WICHITA, Kan. -- District Attorney Marc Bennett says there have been more than one cases of mail theft in Wichita.

In the last few months, on average they've seen about 20 cases per month. So far in August there have been about 14 cases.

The DA tells us these thieves are targeting government checks and even credit card applications.

He said, "you get an unsolicited Discover card, Visa card, whatever. A lot of us will just throw those things away but they'll get those things and maybe fill it out and then come back and hit the mail box again when the card gets delivered."

DA Marc Bennett says they don't believe this is just happening in one area, it's widespread. They believe the thieves are targeting neighborhoods rather than major thoroughfares.

Bennett suggests that those who think their information has been compromised should take action. "You need to close accounts or contact your financial instition if that happens, make sure they know. File a report with local law enforcement."

That includes putting a fraud alert on your credit report.

There are steps you can take to protect your property like, "you can go out and buy a lock for your mailbox so they can just put it through the slot and turn the key to get it open, simple as that."

Mail theft can be a felony, misdemeanor or federal crime depending on what is taken.
