Surprisingly, lines at local retail stores were not very busy Wednesday, but that will likely change over the next few days, as thousands of gifts are returned or exchanged. Meanwhile, thousands more people will begin shopping to use their gift cards.
"I don't know if it's because Christmas was on a Tuesday this year and we're now in the middle of the week and a lot of working people are back to work," said James Haden, store director at Academy Sports & Outdoors in New Market Square.
It wasn't that the store wasn't busy. It's just that the hoards of people weren't returning their Christmas gufts quite yet. But Devin Hammann was returning his duck decoys that he received as a gift.
"They were broken, so I need to get new ones," Hammann said. "They don't float too good whenever they are broken."
Standing in the returns line is not really a pleasurable experience, so Academy staffed up a special table just for returns.
"And as you can see, our returns line isn't extremely long or out the doors, which tells me one of two things," Haden explained. "Either everyone got the right size or exactly what they wanted for Christmas, or they're going to wait until this weekend."
Academy has only been open for less than two months in Wichita, and in that time, Haden says business has been brisk and steady, but no matter where it is, folks usually dread heading to the returns line after Christmas.
"You don't want to go and return what your grandma just bought you," said Hammann. "She doesn't like getting out of the house in the first place."
