Wichita, Kan. -- Carlettea Fisher and her husband were finishing a mowing job near 12th and Hillside Monday morning when she spotted a little girl locked behind a cage.
"She was just standing here crying in her little pajama's a little princess outfit a purple princess outfit and nike tennis shoes, just standing there crying."
Fisher says the girl said she was one, hungry and thirsty, but she couldn't tell Fisher her name. Fisher says she looked around the area, but couldn't find anyone around aside from the girl.
"I don't know how she got inside of here that's the biggest thing I don't know if someone abandoned her, if she crawled in here, or if someone abandoned her." says Fisher.
She eventually climb the fence and handed the girl over to her husband. Fisher took the girl to the Wichita Police Patrol North substation, who then transferred the girl to the Wichita Children's home.
Detectives with EMCU say that on Sunday, the girl's mother had asked the 2-year-old girl's Godparents if they wanted to take the girl for the day. They agreed and then took the girl, along with about 15 other children, on an outing using the church van.
As they dropped children off for the day, they asked the children if the little girl had gone with her mom and they said yes. The girl was actually asleep in the very back of the van without anyone noticing.
The Godfather returned the vehicle to the locked gate of the church, locked it up and left. The mom believed that the child was with the Godparents, while the Godparents thought she was with the mom.
The girl spent the night in the van and at some point got out through the passenger door. There is no indication yet if charges could be filed in connection to the case.
