Many Kansas driver's license and county tag offices have reopened after being closed for just over a week so the state could make $40 million computer system upgrade. The reopenings did not come without some problems and some offices still are not operating at full capacity.

The upgrade replaced 1980s-era computers and software, but employees say the new system has a few problems of its own. The troubles are causing delays and some work can't be completed.

Reno County Treasurer Clark Miller says issuing new plates is the problem. Miller says his office can usually assist customers with six computer terminals, but now only half of them are communicating with the main system at the Department of Revenue in Topeka.

"At three of our terminals we can issue new plates. The rest of our terminals we can not. My motor vehicles supervisor thinks it has to be something in the profile," said Miller.

Miller says the state and county offices conducted a stress test on the new software upgrade last week. He says the test went well, but the problems started when offices officially reopened.

Some counties like Sedgwick realized there would be problems and decided to postpone their reopening. Department of Revenue officials say the issues are manageable and they are working to fix them.

Tag offices in Sedgwick County will reopen Wednesday after new data systems were installed across the state.

County officials said tag offices will offer extended business hours from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 9, 10 and 11 to accommodate residents who were not able to access the offices during the transition.

May renewals include residents whose last names begin with E, F or G.

Online renewals on Kansas Web-Tags also are available.

Kansans who had to wait a week to conduct business at Department of Motor Vehicle offices can get back in line.

The offices will reopen across the state Tuesday, after being closed for a week while a new computer system was installed.

The Kansas Department of Revenue is asking for patience from residents, saying employees will need time to adapt to the new $40 million computer system.

The department says the new computer system will make filing paperwork more efficient and cost effective.
