TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW-TV) — It's been nearly a week since WIBW 13 News reported what was originally described as an accident with minor injuries at SW 21st and Auburn Road in Topeka.

The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office reported that a Ford Focus failed to yield at a stop sign and struck a medical transport van.

John Berberich, 69, and his 67-year-old wife, Zona, were reportedly on their way to a hospice care center and suffered what were described at the time as minor injuries. However on Monday, published obituaries indicated that both died hours apart two days after the accident on July 18.

The Topeka Capital Journal reported that the coroner's office indicates Zona's death was due to crash injuries. The office is conducting an autopsy for John.

The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office is still investigating how what looked like a minor accident became a double fatality.

Friends and family are welcome to pay their respects from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Hope Chapel on SW 17th street in Topeka.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association, Midland Hospice Care or Helping Hands Humane Society.
