We've watched as veterans from other states ignore monument closures from the government shutdown, but today, the Kansas Honor Flight left for a battle with the barricades.

Even though many National museums and monuments are closed because of the shutdown showdown, 26 vets climbed aboard an airplane, determined to go to D.C.

"For them to block it off and keep these veterans who freed this country is just totally ridiculous," said Honor Flight Executive Board Member Tom Demayo.

Honor Flight organizers say the Air and Space Museum and Fort McHenry will be closed, but they will have access to other National landmarks on their agenda, like the World War II Monument.

"Because of their first amendment rights, they are allowed to enter to discuss the closure, of their World War II Memorial," said Kansas Honor Flight President Mike Vancampen. "And while they're there, they're allowed to view the memorial."

Despite the shutdown, the group will get a unique look at the city because a furloughed government worker has volunteered to be a tour guide. These heroes, hoping to make the best out of the situation.

"Maybe they'll reopen things while we're there, that would make it exciting," said Veteran Roy Freund.

The veterans will be returning to Wichita on Friday. Since other visitors will not be at the memorials to thank them for the service, the Honor Flight organization is requesting a large crowd to welcome the heroes home. A shuttle has been set up to transfer people to and from the airport, which will be leaving from the West Burlington Coat Factory at 7:30 p.m. The plane is expected to land at 8:20 p.m.
