It’s a day Colby Liston has been looking forward to for several months: heading back to college. With the help of his family, he moved into Jayhawk Towers at Kansas University in Lawrence.
Colby won’t be alone this year. His cousin, Gage Sairleigh, will be starting his junior year and will be Colby’s roommate.
“Coming up here with Colby, who I've known since the day he was born, is pretty sweet,” Gage said.
Last August, Colby, a Derby native, had been at KU as a freshman less than a week when he became trapped between two cars. He lost both of his legs. Colby had to learn to walk and run again with the help of prosthetics, but he says his biggest challenge had been having a normal life.
“It's not easy for a bilateral knee to not use the wheelchair and to be doing what everybody else is doing,” Colby said. “I'm a regular college student going to class, just like anybody else.”
His father, Matt, says KU has made Colby’s return to “The Hill” a great experience.
“I'm a huge KU fan, and it has nothing to do with sports at all,” Matt said. “They've just been really good to Colby.”
The two will be living on the first floor, and they’ve already come up with their own escape plan.
“If there's a fire, he will just have to get on my back or I'll carry him like a little baby,” Gage said. “That's just a game time decision.”
Colby is already a big Jayhawk fan. He has only one goal for this school year.
“My goal this year is to stay more than one week and leave with both arms,” he said.
