Kansas Man Arrested For Deadly Crash In Nebraska

One person was killed and a suspect is in custody following a brief pursuit and crash in Lexington.

Just before midnight on Monday, Oct. 8, a Nebraska State Patrol trooper attempted a traffic stop of a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup for violating a stop sign and reckless driving at 6th and Grant Streets in Lexington. The pickup driver failed to stop, running a stop sign and proceeding southbound on Highway 283. A brief pursuit ensued.
The pickup continued southbound over an overpass on Highway 283. The driver of the pickup ran a red light at the intersection of Highway 283 & Cattlemen Drive colliding with a westbound 1995 Ford F150 pickup. The impact of the collision caused the Ford pickup to burst into flames. The driver of the Ford pickup was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The name of the driver killed has not been released pending identification and notification of family.

The driver of the Dodge Ram pickup, Destry S. Swartz, 22, Coats, Kansas, and a 17-year old juvenile male passenger from Lexington, were not injured.

Swartz was arrested and lodged in the Dawson County Jail on charges to include, 2nd offense driving under the influence, felony motor vehicle homicide, felony operation of a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, and willful reckless driving.
