A Chase, Kan., man was arrested for drug charges and DUI Saturday evening after rear-ending an SUV and rolling his car while lighting a pipe containing synthetic marijuana, called potpourri.
It happened around 6:45 p.m. near West 56th Avenue and K-96, a few miles southeast of Nickerson in Reno County.
Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson said 48-year-old Shannon Brady was heading westbound on 56th Avenue while lighting the pipe. Brady told deputies he looked up, swerved to miss a deer and hit something. He said he didn’t know what it was. His car left the roadway and rolled over, coming to rest on its top. He was not hurt, but his passenger was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Reports state they were not wearing seatbelts.
Brady admitted to drinking alcohol while driving about an hour before the crash, Henderson said. He was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, DUI, and possession of potpourri and drug paraphernalia.
The couple in the SUV was not hurt.
