Parents in Hoisington say Monday's attack on a 4-year-old boy by his neighbor's dog is a tragedy that underscores a fear most parents have of just how quickly something can go terribly wrong.

"It can just be a minute or a second," said Marilyn Little.

Little is a grandparent now, but she still knows how quickly kids can find themselves in danger.

"You can just turn your back and say, 'I've got to go get the phone, and the next thing you know, you've got a kid screaming and crying," she said.

Police in Hoisington say the 4-year-old boy was playing in a back yard Monday evening when his neighbor's pit bull jumped a fence and attacked him. The boy was flown to a Wichita hospital in critical condition with injuries to his face and one arm.

The dog was put down and samples were sent away for rabies testing. The owner could face vicious dog charges.

The incident hits home for Christi Thompson, who has a 4-year-old son.

"If that was my child, I would be in pieces," Thompson said.

She said her dog is part pit bull, but she does not have any concerns about letting the dog be around her son.

"They can be the sweetest, most loving dogs in the world," Thompson said. "Quite a few people in my family have pit bulls and, if it came down to a dog, I would choose a pit bull over any other dog."

Little said she tells her 10-year-old granddaughter to be wary of any loose or strange dog, no matter the breed.

"Just stay on the bike and keep riding," she tells her granddaughter. "If a dog starts chasing you, go up to somebody's porch or scream."

A Kansas child is currently listed in critical condition after being mauled by a pit bull Monday afternoon.

The attack happened shortly before 6 p.m. in 700 block of East 3rd Street in Hoisington. That's in Barton County.

According to Hoisington Police, a 4-year-old boy was playing in the backyard of a home when a neighbor's pit bull jumped the fence and attacked him.

The child was taken to a Barton County hospital, then transferred to Wichita due to the severity of his injuries.

The dog was later put down, and tested negative for rabies. Police say the neighbor is facing possible charges for having a vicious animal.
