They made the announcement Monday morning: After serving as news director at KFDI since 1979, Dan Dillon is stepping away from the microphone.
Dillon is going to serve as media coordinator for new Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett.
Full disclosure: Dan is my former boss. I worked for him for more than 6 years, and he is one of my closest friends.
Dan’s departure is truly the end of an era, and he is one of the last connections Wichita has to Ol’ Mike Oatman, Mike Lynch, the Radio Ranch and Great Empire Broadcasting.
I am thrilled that Dillon is moving on to another chapter in his life. He has worked hard to build the KFDI news machine, and who knows how many big breaking news events and deadly storms he has covered through the years.
Dan certainly earned his 2005 induction into the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
His wife, Carol, is a hall-of-famer as well, making those sacrifices right along with him.
There are others on Dan’s staff who will continue patrolling the streets of Wichita in their mobile units. My friends John Wright and George Lawson, and others on the staff will continue to carry the news torch that Dan lit and has kept burning brightly all these years.
Congratulations, boss. Be proud of the incredible body of work you created in all these years of broadcasting.
And thanks for serving as a wonderful example to journalists like me.
