Officials with the Buhler school district announced Tuesday they have received verification from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment that the cancer rates in their community are at or below normal statistical levels.

This comes after parents voiced concerns after several teachers and staff members at the grade school were reportedly diagnosed with either lung or breast cancer. Three died from their disease.

KDHE released their findings letter on Tuesday. The agency found cancer rates in and around Buhler were, in many cases, lower than expected for the area.

In February, the school district hired an environmental group to test in and around the Buhler Grade School. The group's findings from interior environmental quality testing showed that Buhler Grade School falls well within normal parameters and is safe for all students and staff.

“We are happy this is matter has come to a resolution. We look forward to getting back to the work of growing our community and our school district," said Buhler Mayor Daniel Friesen.
