There’s no doubt that the Kansas State Wildcats are bowl bound. The only thing we don’t know is which bowl game they’re going to. But the fans of Wildcat Nation don’t really care. They’re already signing up in droves to follow the ‘Cats wherever they end up.
K-State fans are wild with anticipation that their Wildcats could be playing for the National Championship. Those ‘Cat backers are also rushing to fill up buses and planes, so they can be there at the game.
As Collin Klein and the team take care of business on the field, racking up scores and winning, business picks up with those putting travel packages together for the bowl game to come.
Travel consultants, like Linda Dickson at Village Tours and Travel, were already fielding calls before the Wildcats moved into first place. Now, they’re in “no huddle” mode with some 300 making bowl-bound deposits. Like safeties blitzing the quarterback, fans are blitzing operators, seeing what travel packages are available.
"We've got the tentative plans for the National Championship, the Sugar Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl,” Dickson said. “So, wherever K-State goes, that's where we're going to go."
Some 300 have made $100 refundable bowl package deposits. And that’s before it’s settled where the ‘Cats go - the Fiesta in Glendale, Arizona; the Sugar in New Orleans; or the National Championship in Miami, which is the goal.
"K-State's in control of their own destiny,” says Village Tours and Travel President Jeff Arensdorf. “If they win a couple more games, we know for sure where they're going to go. It's just a lot easier to make plans as they keep winning."
The priciest trip will be to Miami for the championship. That price isn’t settled, but for a round trip, three-night hotel and direct charter flight from Wichita with a ticket is between $2,500 and $3,000 or more. But then, how often do championship game opportunities come?
And no doubt those lists will keep growing between now and December 2nd when the official bowl announcements are made.
