WICHITA, Kan. — A former Kansas police chief is dead after being hit by a semi while trying to clear debris from a highway in northeast Wichita.
It happened around 3 p.m. Monday on K-96 near Rock Road. A pickup truck heading west lost a load of drywall on the road, and another driver stopped to pick up the debris from the highway.
A westbound semi hauling rocks swerved into the median to avoid other cars that had stopped due to the debris, then hit the good samaritan who had stopped. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
He's been identified as 61-year-old Larry Dobbs of El Dorado. Dobbs had previously served as police chief in Winfield in the early 2000s.
No one else was hurt.
