BEL AIRE, Kan. — The State of Kansas and the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office are investigating the apparent accidental death of a baby at a Wichita-area foster home.
On Thursday, August 28, sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a Bel Aire home in the 4200 block of North Mission to assist EMS on an infant who wasn't breathing. The four-month-old was soon pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say the baby had been sleeping on a couch with her 18-year-old mother, who woke up to find the child not breathing. The case is being treated as an accidental suffocation, but autopsy results are still pending.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is also investigating because it happened at a foster home - but the baby was not a foster child. The sheriff's office said the woman and her child were staying at the home.
