WICHITA, Kan. — A highway closure rescheduled from last week is set to begin tonight.
Beginning Friday at 7 p.m., all lanes of I-235 from Central to Zoo Boulevard will be closed so metal framework for the new bridges at the soon-to-be 13th Street exit can be installed.
A detour will direct traffic to West Street using Central and Zoo Boulevard. All northbound traffic will exit at Central, travel to West Street, travel north then turn left onto Zoo Boulevard and return to I-235 via the northbound ramp. Southbound traffic will be directed using the same city streets.
KDOT will be installing 12 girders over the three days for the bridges that will connect I-235 to 13th St. This interchange is expected to relieve traffic congestion at Zoo Blvd. once completed.
KDOT spokesman Tom Hein the the two-mile section of I-235 should reopen the night of May 4.
