A man who was reportedly assaulted at a party early Saturday morning suffered additional injuries in two crashes near Hutchinson as another person drove him to a local hospital.
Deputies were originally dispatched to an accident around 12:45 a.m. at 30th Street and Buhler Road, east of Hutchinson, but found nothing, Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson said. Moments later, fire crews were called to a vehicle fire at Kansas Highway 61 and 43rd Street on the town’s northeast side.
When crews arrived, they found a pickup had hit a tree head-on and caught fire. Eighteen-year-old Jesus Valtierra was lying in the grass with his clothes partially burnt, Henderson said. He suffered a broken ankle, cuts to his face and possible internal injuries. He was flown to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for treatment.
A passenger in the pickup, 14-year-old Deshja Starks, suffered injuries to both legs in the crash and was taken to a local hospital.
The driver was not found at the scene.
The two told deputies they had been at a party when Valtierra was assaulted. He was then placed in the bed of the truck and was en route to the hospital when the truck crashed at 30th Street and Buhler Road. The truck continued on to the hospital but crashed again at K-61 and 43rd Street.
A while later, another person arrived at a Hutchinson hospital. That individual is being investigated as the driver, Henderson said.
Current conditions of the three were not immediately available. The incident remains under investigation.
