Friends of two men on trial for gunning down a Hutchinson mother, said the suspects admitted to the murder.

During a preliminary hearing in a Reno County courtroom Monday, a woman said she had known Billy Joe Craig, Jr., 48, and Charles Christopher Logsdon, 32, for two decades. Both are charged with first-degree murder in connection to Jennifer Heckel's death.

The 27-year-old was found shot to death in her kitchen June 14, 2011. Authorities said Heckel's 5-year-old son was in the home during the shooting. Detectives testified the child ran to a neighbor's home after the shooting, saying his mommy was hurt.

The boy then used his mother's cell phone to call 911, a witness said.

Police said Heckel was killed over a case of mistaken identity.

Craig and Logsdon were arrested for Heckel's murder in September.

Karra Branton, told a Reno county judge she had a phone conversation with Logsdon after the shooting death. She said Logsdon admitted he shot and killed Heckel.

A judge will decide whether there is enough evidence to send Craig and Logsdon to trial. The preliminary hearing is expected to last all week.

A preliminary hearing is underway in a Reno county courtroom for two men charged with killing a Hutchinson mother.

27-year-old Jennifer Heckel was found dead inside her home June of 2011. Prosecutors charged Billy Joe Craig, Jr., 48, and Charles Christopher Logsdon, 32, with first-degree murder in connection to Heckel’s death.

In court Monday morning, prosecutors said the suspects shot and killed Heckel over a case of mistaken identity. Investigators said the mother was shot multiple times in her kitchen. One bullet entered her back, another grazed her left side. Heckel also suffered from two gunshot wounds to her head.

Authorities said the woman’s 5-year-old son was in the home during the shooting and alerted neighbors.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday for two men charged with killing a 27-year-old Hutchinson woman.

The hearing for 48-year-old Billy Joe Craig Jr. and 32-year-old Charles Christopher Logsdon is scheduled to begin Monday in Reno County court.

Craig and Logsdon are charged with first-degree murder in the death last June of Jennifer Heckel.

The judge in the hearing has to determine if there's probable cause that Craig and Logsdon committed the crime. If he finds probable cause, the case moves to trial and a date is set for arraignments, when pleas will be entered.

Heckel was shot to death in her home on the north side of Hutchinson. Her 5-year-old son was in the home when the shooting occurred and alerted neighbors.
