WICHITA, Kan. — A bicyclist was rushed to a local hospital after being hit by an SUV Friday afternoon in southwest Wichita.
It happened around 1:30 p.m. at Harry and Fern streets. Sgt. Steve Yarberry said a man in his 50s was heading south on Fern and ran the stop sign at Harry. He was then hit by a westbound Chevy Suburban.
The bicyclist suffered critical injuries and was taken to St. Francis Hospital. Yarberry said his condition has since improved. His name has not been released.
Yarberry said there are city ordinances stating that bicyclists have to follow the same traffic laws that apply to cars.
"Especially in this circumstance, you have a stop sign," he said. "If he would've stopped and looked, this accident probably would have been prevented."
