A man from Anthony remains in critical condition after a train struck his car.

It happened in Harper County just before 10 p.m. Thursday. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, William Mumaw, 39, was driving on NW 50th Ave., when he tried to drive around crossing arms.

Troopers said the arms were down and lights flashed to signal an oncoming train. The BNSF train struck Mumaw’s car on the passenger side, causing the vehicle to spin off the tracks. The driver was thrown from his car.

Mumaw was taken to a nearby hospital, and then transported to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis for treatment. A hospital spokeswoman said he remains in critical condition.

No one else was hurt.

Authorities said Mumaw was not wearing a seat belt.
