Giant hail hit Hutchinson a month ago, and now the repairs are generating money for the city. Mass roof repairs are underway, and for every job the contractor must pay an application fee to the city.
The city collected $4.4 million worth of roofing permits in the last month.
On average, the city granted about 6 roofing permits a week. In the past week, the city has given 202 work permits.
That also means $2.4 million worth of business--in one week.
One of the most expensive projects is the $8 million roof on the Hutchinson mall. CAT Contracting has the 600,000 square foot job divided into 15 phases.
The permit to work on Sears roof alone is close to $3,700. That's where the roofers are working now.
Hutchinson has issued a total of 624 repair permits since the storm on July 23. That business has drawn many roofers to Hutchinson.
Since the end of July, 81 new roofing contractors have been given applications to work in the city.
To get a work permit the roofing company must show proof of insurance and meet other requirements. City officials also visit the work site.
Even if a homeowner plans to repair their own roof, they still must apply for a permit from the city.
