Shirley Shipman volunteers her time to make sure senior citizens in Belle Plaine can get a ride to their medical appointments.
"She's helpful and I need her and she's always there when I need her," said 90-year-old Nannie Underwood.
On Wednesday morning, Shirley was on her way to Wichita for her grandson's medical appointment. While driving through Derby, a man driving a truck signaled to her that her tire was low. When she pulled into a nearby gas station, the man put air in the tire.
"I just couldn't believe a stranger helping me," she said.
But the kindness did not stop there.
The man found out Shirley was on a tight budget and could not afford a pair of new tires. He got her cell phone number and went to a nearby Wal-Mart. At the store, he purchased a $350 gift card, so that Shirley could buy two new tires.
"An angel followed me and got me my tires because I could've had an accident with my grandchild in there," said Shirley.
Those who know Shirley said she is deserving of the help from a good Samaritan.
"I thought if it was gonna happen to somebody, it couldn't have happened to anybody better than Shirley," said Nannie. "Because she is always willing to help somebody."
The man, who did not want to be recognized for his efforts, said he goes by the name of Berry. He told KAKE News on the phone that he felt a calling to help Shirley.
Shirley said she cannot thank Berry enough for the gift and will continue paying it forward.
"I'm thanking the Lord and I will pass it on. I will help as much as I can," said Shirley.
