The board of trustees at Wichita’s Friends University announced Tuesday that it has accepted the resignation of President T.J. Arant, effective March 21.

The board appointed Dr. Darcy Zabel, vice president of academic affairs at Friends, to be the interim president.

The release indicates that, in his letter of resignation, Arant said he intended to seek other opportunities.

Dr. John Lewis, president of the Friends University Board of Trustees, says the board and Dr. Arant had a difference of opinion regarding the long-term vision for Friends University.

“When we were determining that we may have different visions for the university, Dr. Arant and the board mutually thought that the best thing to do is to part company,” Lewis said.

He said there were no concerns about Dr. Arant beyond a difference in philosophy.

“Dr. Arant has been a complete professional,” Lewis said. “There has been no impropriety, no misbehavior, nothing along those lines at all.”

The board unanimously accepted Arant’s resignation. Lewis says a search committee will be formed to begin the process of finding a permanent replacement for Arant.

Arant became president at Friends July 1, 2011. He replaced Biff Green.
