Wichita, Kan. -- There was a Fourth District showdown Monday between the two republicans competing to represent South Central Kansas in Congress.

Two term U.S. Representative Mike Pompeo now facing a challenge from his predecessor former Representative Todd Tiahrt. They have their first face to face debate in a political forum put on by the Wichita Crime Commission.

Though both are republicans, Pompeo says, "We are very different, very different folks."

Both used the approximate hour long debate to show their different approaches in representing Kansas.

Tiahrt says Pompeo is part of the Washington grid lock which can't get work done.

Tiahrt says, "In Washington, D.C. today we have a train wreck. And I don't see Congress doing anything to correct the problem. In fact what I see is Congress taking pictures of the wreck and then try to raise money by selling the pictures."

Pompeo says he's not going to legislate the same way as Tiahrt saying, "I came in with the class of 2010, 87 Republicans, the tea party class. The idea was we're not going to do business the old way."

Tiahrt gave three reasons he wants his old job back after a failed bid for the Senate. "The local economy, the national economy and bringing this seat back to represent the people, back to public service, not the power, the perks and the privileges."

Pompeo says his mission is to reduce the budget saying, "In the year before I went to Congress the country spent $1.4 trillion more than it took in. That is not a taxing problem. That is a spending problem."

The two traded jabs about who traveled the most and for what reasons while in office.

No other debates are set at this time before the August 5th Republican Primary.
