Fort Scott man killed in accident

FORT SCOTT, Kan A Fort Scott, Kansas man was killed when he lost control of his van on a Southeast Kansas highway. The accident happened Monday afternoon on K-47, east of Altoona.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said Richard Hawkins was westbound on the highway when he crossed onto the south shoulder. He overcorrected, causing van to skid sidways across the highway. Hawkins' van entered the ditch and struck a fence, coming to rest upside down.

Hawkins, 53, was the only person in the van.
