A Fort Riley soldier was killed late last week while serving in Afghanistan.
According to the Department of Defense, 37-year-old Captain James D. Nehl of Gardiner, OR was killed Friday in Ghazni Province. He died from small arms fire while on patrol.
He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley.
Capt. Nehl joined the Army in 2007 and had been at Fort Riley since May. He had previously been deployed to Iraq, and this was his first deployment to Afghanistan.
